Wow. After remembering that both ReiserFS and DAC960 support are built into the kernel now, I decided to take a chance and do this:
apt-get -t testing install kernel-image-2.4.19-686 After carefully following the package's config instructions (displayed automatically), I rebooted and the box came back up with a new kernel - and without a hitch! I'm sure this is old hat to Debian veterans, but I'm IMPRESSED. Now I just need to figure out why the OS still doesn't recognize the full 1GB of RAM in the machine - I wonder if this kernel was compiled without himem support.
