The orginal patch is mostly OK, there were likely just a few misunderstandings.
Renaming the file applications.menu is ok according to the spec as long as $XDG_MENU_PREFIX ist set to "kde-" (see also first section of the freedesktop.org link I posted earlier) However, renaming the applications-merged is NOT ok, because this is a shared directory and any kind of application which does not "belong" to any of the desktop projects needs to be able to rely on it.
