Just tried it with the same version on my sid:

LANG=de_DE -> lowriter. Atuo. Underlined. Suggestions: Auto and Asus.
Works.
(of course with having hunspell-de-de installed)

LANG=C lowriter. Atuo. (Didn't notice german, but that of course
is impossible here for too less infos). Fomat->Character.
German (Germany) for the text. Underlined. Suggestions: Auto and Asus.
Works.

LANG=C lowriter. Cra. Underlined. Many suggestions, amonst them Car.
Works.

How do you think should spellchecking work if you didn't install any dict? ;)
