Just a suggestion: you may make links on file systems that support soft or hard links. This requires de-linking and creating a normal copy when changes are necessary only to one package, but not to all. Though this solution works on the lowest system level, it is a solution to the space problem for file systems that support soft/hard links: the space is used only once. If the file system does not support links, use the current default solution.
