A new twist on the problem. I was eager to test the new Knoppix, dated 2004-05-04, because it has OOo 1.1.1 installed.
It does NOT have the same problem as the OOo 1.1.1 installed on my (earlier) Knoppix variant. So what is the difference? I suspect it has something to do with the different kernel. The problem for me occured with 2.4.22-xfs kernel (a vanilla kernel with xfs patch and configured by Klaus Knopper). The new Knoppix has two kernels installed, 2.4.26 and 2.6.5. With the 2.6.5 kernel, I _can_ save to floppy disk (even double-clicking on the save button). So apparently, if the fundamental problem is a timing problem of some kind, and the newer kernel is faster, the problem goes away??? Wish I could be less vague, but this is as precise as I can be! I spoke with a friend who told me that he had seen similar problems with older versions of Windows/Word. Working directly on a file located on the floppy disk is a tricky business, he said. Always safer to work in the home directory, and then save to floppy. Conrad
