I figured instead of doing first two, I'ld cut to the chase and do this
last. After all, if it doesn't work with the defaults, then futzing
around with my settings won't help. So I did try in an account with all
the default gnome settings (fonts - sans etc.) and still no go. Sorry I
can't give you more useful info
