However, I think there must be something wrong on your system. By default fontconfig will automatically recurse into all subdirectories. I verified this on a clean install with no changes to the default fontconfig configuration: # fc-cache -f -v | grep /usr/share/fonts/truetype fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype": caching, 0 fonts, 2 dirs fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera": caching, 10 fonts, 0 dirs fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice": caching, 1 fonts, 0 dirs # fc-list | grep FreeSans # mkdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/test # cp /tmp/FreeSans.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/test # fc-cache -f -v | grep /usr/share/fonts/truetype fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype": caching, 0 fonts, 3 dirs fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/test": caching, 1 fonts, 0 dirs fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-bitstream-vera": caching, 10 fonts, 0 dirs fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice": caching, 1 fonts, 0 dirs # fc-list | grep FreeSans FreeSans:style=Medium So there should never be a need to add "<dir>/var/share/fonts/truetype/openoffice</dir>" to your configuration. Closing bug as unreproducible. Chris
