For the record: I am a university student and I really prefer email-based workflows; and yes, one classmate of mine uses Emacs to read emails :)
That being said, I agree that GUIs (either web-based or not) tend to be more approachable at first, but they should still be easily interoperable with email (unlike GitLab).
