That time is much better spent with improving existing tools.
The point of rewriting *is* to improve an existing tool. Or, more accurately, pave the way towards doing that.
Seriously. *If* the choice is (a) nobody touches the code with a ten-foot-pole and its debbugs page accrues cruft nobody's going to fix, or (b) somebody rewrites the tool to Python because, well, I'll leave enumerating the reasons why one might want to do that (and/or why I personally did exactly that, and continue to do that) for another time …
