Depends on what is your preference, what do you want to help with? Basically you can start by forking https://salsa.debian.org/agx/git-buildpackage on Salsa and then start hacking away on the things you want to improve. If you want to do Python coding, fixing this issue could be an easy one to start with: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1084672#12. If you want to help with the documentation, you could for example extend the page that explains what the various gbp.conf options mean.
