I believe this should be done. It's also in the spirit of providing something useful on those architectures. Having non-installable gnome metapackages is not very friendly to users of those architectures. We could possibly also tweak debian-cd to do something else on non-linux but in general I think it's best if we limit differences across architectures when it can be avoided. Architecture specific documentation may recommend users to use the (non-default) Xfce image if that's the preferred image according to porters.
