like update-rc.d disable network-manager or dpkg-divert --rename --local
/usr/sbin/NetworkManager or just using equivs?

sure, it also would be nice to get a question for disabling it by default, while installing, if a /etc/network/interface file is found. it would save many people a lot of pain.
