Arguing against the developer's/maintainer's freedom of choice based on a "feeling" about the learning curve imposed on an intangible group of future contributors is faulty. People that really want to contribute will simply take the time and effort to learn. If they aren't able to sufficiently educate themselves, then they weren't really qualified to participate anyway, so it's not really a net loss.
