I guess you missed the point Charles wanted to propose: It sounds
reasonable to provide .desktop files and create menu files from
these. The reasoning is simple: .desktop files just contain more
information (like translations etc.) and it is easier to drop
some information than to guess information from thin air (if you
want a menu -> .desktop conversion) automatically.
So there is no real need to ask Charles whether he want to hack
window managers if he want to continue menu support.
