With the help of Brendan O'Dea I wrote something similar a while back as a way of determining the most depended upon packages as part of an exercise to determine the most important things for the Linux Standard Base to standardize. The script and result are at, http://freestandards.org/futures/identification/depends/ In particular the annotated output is sorta interesting (but out of date now, I should re-run it at some point).
