In the real world (tm) building things by hand is not acceptable because of a) complicated build dependencies which you do not want to think about each time you rebuild world b) the amount of work, considering at least 6 architectures (in current slind) multiplied by the number of target packages (42 in current slind, and increasing). I mean, you typically want to build things according to their build-deps.
