But generating cache data in the current directory (or subdirectories thereof) does not make sense, so requiring it for the special case of buildds doesn't sound very sensible. Anyway, I think many packages create files in /var during operation, that's all this hierarchy is meant for. I don't see how we could generally restrict package build processes to the build directory, especially since there's no sane way to detect when we are "building a package".
