Squid-3 will read the same config file, and the cache directory is compatible so there is indeed an upgrade path. Its not a total rewrite - its a port of the squid 2.5 C source to C++, but .... squid 3.0 is not yet 'stable'. Squid 2.5 is still the stable series. And we (upstream) don't maintain a single source tree - we have one tree for 2.X and one for 3.X. I don't think it makes sense to try and make a single source package for this. I think you definately want to allow co-installation though. After 3.0 is considered stable, you could definately do a 'drop in and go' approach.
