Please upgrade to the 2.6.15 or upcoming 2.6.16 kernel in etch/sid, and it is very well probable that your problems should go away. For information, all your problems have absolutely nothing to do with ide-generic, but some brokeness involving the ide-modular patch from Herbert Xu, which was now dropped.
