Then, find people (or the right mailing list) who do some work in that area (if you don't find the right place, a question to this list is o.k.) and work with them. That said, if you just have some spare time and want to do something for Debian, fire up your web browser and browse Debian's bug data base on <http://bugs.debian.org>. Bug fixing help is always welcome.
