Please see Russ Allbery's reply in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=405354 .  I agree that
this applies in the case of md5.[ch].  md2.[ch] appear to be non-free,
however (sadly) so this probably needs looking into.
