Heh, I just had a reply prepared in my drafts. =) There is indeed another patch, also provided by Taco Hoekwater: http://www.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-pdftex/2006-November/002522.html (with a reply from Thanh Han The). He suggests adding if vf_nf>font_max then overflow("virtual fonts",font_max); right after vf_nf (twice) in pdftex.web. I don't have the source, so if you could test pdflatex with test.tex?
