The bug is still present and recompiling mc will also not fix it.
The commit mentioned in the first post isn’t responsible: -Wl,--as-needed
is no longer needed since at least bookworm but IIRC even bullseye as it
became the toolchain default. My guess is more that mc links libext2something
which links libcom_err, and that something in dependency generation goes
wrong, see the build log:
