It might be installed, and maybe (partly) working, but unusable as long as the 
postinst script doesn't finish the right way.

Look on the crystalcursors #351200 - The main difference is that this is 
experienced on two of my machines in a full desktop environment and not in a 
minimal chroot.

Update-alternatives does to the best of my knowledge not create any 
directories.
