Everyone tested the migration but not the simple case. Your comments are useful and it would be good to preserve them above the conditional block. No good deed goes unpunished.

In Bourne shells (e.g. sh or bash), only \<newline> is a continuation marker, so it is far too easy to add a trailing space when unwrapping lines or sending snippets via email. Everyone using Bourne shell will be bitten by this one sooner or later.
