Actually I have to partially withdraw that earlier conclusion, today I did encounter one failure on a system with all logical volumes making up the system paths on a SSD. The system in question had been booting fine with lvm2 2.02.122-2 roughly a dozen of times before and I haven't been able to reproduce the failure case again, but it does strengthen the hunch of a timing related issue.
