Package: ettercap-common,ettercap-graphical Version: 1:0.8.1-1 Severity: serious User: debian...@lists.debian.org Usertags: piuparts replaces-without-breaks
Hi, during a test with piuparts and DOSE tools I noticed your package causes removal of files that also belong to another package. This is caused by using Replaces without corresponding Breaks. And of course by shipping the same file in two packages: usr/share/ettercap/ettercap.png which looks like an incomplete move to another package. The installation sequence to reproduce this problem is apt-get install ettercap-common # (1) apt-get install ettercap-graphical apt-get remove ettercap-graphical # (2) The list of installed files at points (1) and (2) should be identical, but the following files have disappeared: usr/share/ettercap/ettercap.png This is a serious bug violating policy 7.6, see http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-replaces and also see the footnote that describes this incorrect behavior http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/footnotes.html#f53 The ettercap-graphical package has the following relationships with ettercap-common: Conflicts: N/A Breaks: N/A Replaces: ettercap, ettercap-common, ettercap-gtk, ettercap-text-only I don't see what you want to achieve with these Replaces, so I cannot suggest a better solution. Please read the policy (and explain your intentions if you need help). Have packages been split? (version?) Have files moved between the packages? (version?) Should packages not be installable at the same time? >From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...): 0m25.8s ERROR: FAIL: After purging files have disappeared: /usr/share/ettercap/ettercap.png owned by: ettercap-graphical 0m25.8s ERROR: FAIL: After purging files have been modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/ettercap-common.list not owned cheers, Andreas
