If it meets the requirements for being release-critical, file a bug report and cherry-pick the fix. However, if the package is not completely unusable, you shouldn't consider fixing it as the release team won't unblock it. My suggestion: Fix the #698037 by applying the above patch and have the package unblocked by the release team. Once the package has been migrated into testing, package the latest upstream version and upload it into unstable, you can later repackage it for Wheezy Backports if an up-to-date version is really that important.
