This appears to be due to an interaction between some mesa libraries,
the nouveau xserver, and my very obsolete Nvidia hardware (which has
caused me endless trouble: I'll never buy Nvidia again). I have a
workaround and Openscad now runs. I'm closing the bug as I am probably
the only person in the world experiencing it.
