Can't confirm:

  root@debian:~# ifup em0
  /lib/freebsd/route add default 1.2.3.4
  add net default: gateway 1.2.3.4
  root@debian:~# 

Could you try to investigate this a little bit further? I'm pretty sure
it's something in your system misconfigured.
