Yes, true again. And quite correctly guessed. I'm doing most of my work on my laptop, where I'm running stable. The dpkg-source there doesn't pass `--abort-on-upstream-changes' per default, which is why I never saw this. The github repo contains additional changes, which addresses the issues you've raised.
