never? libA uses curl+openssl, libB curl+gnutls and progC uses libA
and libB.

i'm right thinking at versioned symbols, libcurl3 and libcurl3-gnutls as
the solution to my packaging problems. i'll send you a patch, i think
you are also interested in versioned symbols too.
