I don't know if it is really a bug.
In the steps to reproduce the "problem" reported by John Capell I can read:
make-kpkg clean; sudo make-kpkg --append-to-version xx --revision xx
kernel-image; sudo dpkg -i xxxx
but he should specify the --initrd flag too!
So John, please, be sure to build all necessary modules INSIDE the kernel
and not as module, or retry building the initrd image.
I can safely build kernels and initrd images in lenny simply by specifing
the --initrd flag.
So, please, retry the steps by adding "--initrd" and, if it is successful,
let's ignore this bug!
