Package: mysql-server
Version: 4.0.24-10
Severity: important

I ran into this same problem when installing Sarge. Why isn't
configuring a root and user password part of the mysql-server install?

I went through all this with Sarge, figured it out and eventually
managed to make it work. Now I have to go through all that again.

I do have a valid LAN IP address and my hostname is in /etc/hosts.
I've looked at the errors in syslog (the same ones I saw in sarge).
No, mysqld is not running, so "/usr/sbin/mysqld --skip-grant &" fails.
I've looked at /etc/mysql/debian.cnf but the documentation is unclear
whether I'm to hand edit the password in there or let something else
do it. Is that an encrypted or clear-text password?

"So in most of the times you can fix the situation by making sure that
the debian.cnf file contains the right password, e.g. by setting a new
one (remember to do a "flush privileges" then)."

How, to both statements?

Almost any other package is just an aptitude install away. mysql-
server forces me to relearn the initialization everytime I do it.
Yes, I stored off a Usenet post that explains how I'm going to solve
the problem, but why is that necessary? Why not just get the root and
user passwords during install?

I'm not feeding a website via mysql. Security of my mysql data is not
paramount to me. My box is secure, and nobody's going to even know
I'm running mysql (it's a one user system).

So why isn't mysqld running? The install is broken, that's why.

Sorry for my tone. I just don't think I should be running into this
problem yet again.
