Package: mysql-server Version: 4.0.24-10 Severity: important I ran into this same problem when installing Sarge. Why isn't configuring a root and user password part of the mysql-server install?
I went through all this with Sarge, figured it out and eventually managed to make it work. Now I have to go through all that again. I do have a valid LAN IP address and my hostname is in /etc/hosts. I've looked at the errors in syslog (the same ones I saw in sarge). No, mysqld is not running, so "/usr/sbin/mysqld --skip-grant &" fails. I've looked at /etc/mysql/debian.cnf but the documentation is unclear whether I'm to hand edit the password in there or let something else do it. Is that an encrypted or clear-text password? "So in most of the times you can fix the situation by making sure that the debian.cnf file contains the right password, e.g. by setting a new one (remember to do a "flush privileges" then)." How, to both statements? Almost any other package is just an aptitude install away. mysql- server forces me to relearn the initialization everytime I do it. Yes, I stored off a Usenet post that explains how I'm going to solve the problem, but why is that necessary? Why not just get the root and user passwords during install? I'm not feeding a website via mysql. Security of my mysql data is not paramount to me. My box is secure, and nobody's going to even know I'm running mysql (it's a one user system). So why isn't mysqld running? The install is broken, that's why. Sorry for my tone. I just don't think I should be running into this problem yet again. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-386 Locale: LANG=en_CA, LC_CTYPE=en_CA (charmap=ISO-8859-1) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_CA) Versions of packages mysql-server depends on: ii adduser 3.67 Add and remove users and groups ii debconf 1.4.58 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.5-6 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdbi-perl 1.48-2 Perl5 database interface by Tim Bu ii libgcc1 1:4.0.1-2 GCC support library ii libmysqlclient12 4.0.24-10 mysql database client library ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.6-7 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libwrap0 7.6.dbs-8 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra ii mailx 1:8.1.2-0.20050715cvs-1 A simple mail user agent ii mysql-client 4.0.24-10 mysql database client binaries ii mysql-common 5.0.12beta-2 mysql database common files (e.g. ii passwd 1:4.0.3-35 change and administer password and ii perl 5.8.7-3 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii psmisc 21.6-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-4 compression library - runtime mysql-server recommends no packages. -- debconf information: mysql-server/nis_warning: mysql-server/really_downgrade_from_41: false mysql-server/mysql_update_hints1: mysql-server/start_on_boot: true mysql-server/postrm_remove_databases: false * mysql-server/mysql_install_db_notes: -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
