There are a $header_cache and a $message_cachedir variables for caching headers and messages. What I guess I will do is to extend my X-Label editor program ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/editxlabel/) to do batch processing of tagged messages from within mutt instead of editing with an external process such as sed.
