First, You don't need "numerous versions", but last 0.15.1+dfsg-1 would
be enough. And second, not only "WinXP", but debian should be fresh
installed too, I think. Here is more info may help You: XP service pack 3
and Command line:

kvm -net nic,model=rtl8139,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:57 -net 
tap,ifname=tap0,script=no -hda vmx/wxp-c.img

I am using bridged networking with brctl. Try different nics. Try to
replace nic few times to get new "Local Area Connection 1"(2,3, etc.)

How much do You need? 3000? I think 2 independent reports are enough to
indicate a real problem.
