I needed the workaround because I haven't upgraded to GNOME3 yet; I need to wait until I have time to figure out the various configuration changes I'll need to make. Also, having gnome-power-manager depend on newer gnome-screensaver solves half the problem, but that doesn't prevent someone from upgrading gnome-screensaver and not upgrading gnome-power-manager, which would introduce this bug.
