When installing an additional hard drive in the same system and booting grub from there, the problem does not occur.
When installing the problematic hard disk in a different system, the problem does not occur there either. It seems the problem is specific to this harddisk and system. The mainboard is a SuperMicro X8DAE, the drive is a OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD3-2VTX120G.
