Hi Jon,

I suspect you are facing the Amazon Developer token issue (the token
delivered with the releases before 0.6.x has been cancelled by Amazon).

I recommend you to either upgrade to 0.6.0 (I know the Debian packages are
not already available, but you can still try a source install) or set up a
new Amazon Developer token in the Preferences window of the application. 
Here is the new token that we use in the latest version:

About UI freeze problems, they are fixed in 0.6.0.
