A much simpler solution could be to run _SYSTEMCTL_SKIP_REDIRECT=false /etc/init.d/samba status Up until now, we haven't advertised this env variable for external usage though. > 2. This way you can easily query the status of the different components, have them monitored, respawned etc. That said, the reason for the existence of this script still eludes me.
