thanks, that works as well, of course :-)

Setting "X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Initialization" _does_ work, but I need
to set it in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/notification-daemon.desktop
(part of gnome-session-common), which happens to be read
before /etc/xdg/autostart/notification-daemon.desktop, which is then
ignored. I guess it should be set in both.

With that setting in both, the notification daemon is up before g-p-m
shows the battery warning – thanks!
