Could you try adding X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=Initialization [1] to the autostart file and then run gnome-session with the --debug parameter. This should output the start order to .xsession-errors. But then, gnome-power-manager also sets the above key and this probably won't help with other DEs as they most likely don't implement the above extension to the autostart spec.
