A patch from 2001 made it into the code on 2009-08-16

Check offlineimap.conf for specifics :):
# The maximum size should be specified in bytes - e.g. 20000
# maxsize = 2000000

It will simply treat larger messages as non-existent, so they will not
show up on the other side.
