I have tested XIM but it didn't work either. When the input method of gnome-terminal is switched to XIM, the hot-key to toggle the input method is useless and there is no menu popup when I click the scim icon on the system tray so that I cannot select any input methods. It tunes out that I don't find a way to change the input method. I have tested scim on XIM-based program such as rxvt-unicode and they work fine.
