Hi,
I understand why you mentioned:
maint-guide: should recommend a sample package (eg: "hello")
I thought about it too. I do not think you have checked hello package
yourself.
Here is the situation.
hello:
this is packaged without debhelper.
It does not even have compat nor watch
hello-debhelper:
this is packaged in old style debhelper
it has an alternative dh syntax example in it.
So hello is not a good example for maint-guide.
hello-debhelper is a possible example but it is too simple.
That was why Josip (the original author) chose gentoo as more practical
example but package has changed a lot.
So if there is a very good example package in archive, let me know.
Maybe, we should make such along with this package.
(Please note I have very limited time...)

PS: Since using gentoo and not using hello-debhelper are not bug, I am
changing it to wishlist.
