Another update. I've investigated further and this problem appears to have been introduced to my systems when the kpartx package was updated on Feb 26th:
2011-02-26 15:58:49 install kpartx <none> 0.4.8+git0.761c66f-9
I'll follow up the issue with the kpartx maintainer.
