Les opérations de relation usuelles (comme <, « inférieur à ») échouent si l'un des opérandes vaut NaN (« Not a Number », ce qui signifie « pas un nombre »). Ceci déclenche une exception. Pour l'éviter, C99 définit ces macros. Elles garantissent de n'évaluer leurs opérandes qu'une seule fois.
