Yet another me too in one of my boxes, this time with with '/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/reportlab/tools/__init__.py'. I only found this behavior in this box. Force purging python-reportlab left some files behind in reportlab dir, including some .pyc. Later removing /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/reportlab' dir and installing again python-reportlab seems to make the problem vanish.
