Previously it created broken install now it complains and aborts. --force relies on FS not reordering blocks, an assumption which is false and make break unexpectedly. Another vector of the problem is that you run grub-install yourself where as in blocklist installs it should be rerun after every update (sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc) > > I then ran apt-get dist-upgrade.
