I keep hearing about the "French Paradox" and its link to a supplement called 'resveratrol' on TV in magazines and newspapers. It supposedly prevents heart disease and stops the aging process. Claims like this have been made about lots of other products for many, many years, but mostly they have turned out to be a lot of hype. Is there any reason to think that resveratrol is any different? What does it really do? |

Nutritionally speaking, the French have been getting away with murder: They eat all the butter, cream, foie gras, pastry and cheese that their hearts desire, and yet their rates of obesity and heart disease are much lower than ours. The French eat three times as much saturated animal fat as Americans do, and only a third as many die of heart attacks. It's maddening. Baffled, scientists struggled to come up with a few hypotheses: Maybe it was something in the red wine, they said. In 2008, a study found that high doses of resveratrol (a constituent of red wine) mimicked some of the benefits of caloric restriction (including reduced effects of aging). It has been suggested that France's high red wine consumption is a primary factor in the trend. This hypothesis was expounded in a 60 Minutes broadcast in 1991 and more recently on other shows. I t is believed that one of the ingredients in red wine related to this effect is resveratrol. Read more... |
